Message:   Hello and thanks for taking the time to read this post. Let me begin by telling you a little about myself. I am a 38 year old white female who happens to live in the state of Missouri. I am happily married to my best friend and have been married for not quite two years now. In January of this year I went to the doctor with a lump I had found on my left breast. I was really scared to go but knew this was something that needed to be checked out. My family practitioner referred me to our local hospital for a mammogram and they informed me it could just be a mass of fatty tissue but would need to be removed as it could turn into cancer. I went to see their surgeon they recommended me to and in his office he did a biopsy of the lump and sent the results off. Two days later he called me and informed me that it was NOT cancer but it would need to be removed as it could become cancerous. I scheduled surgery and went in to have the growth removed. Surgery went well although I was pretty sore for several days afterwards. Well my world came to a halt on the second day after my surgery when the surgeon called me on the phone to inform me that the growth he had removed was in fact cancer. I was absolutly speechless, I could not control the steady stream of tears that ran down my face--my voice was gone, I could not even speak. All normalcy as I knew it went out the window that day--things will never be the same. Everyone imagines dreading to hear news such as this but when news that you have cancer actually comes you have no way of realizing just how altering it will be on you. I just felt like someone had knocked the life right out of me.
Well needless to say I had to go back in and talk to the surgeon as another surgery was needed to remove wider margins around the area where the growth had been removed. I had to go in for a second surgery in which more tissue was removed and some of my lymph nodes were removed. After the surgery they recommended radiation and chemotherepy treatments. Me and my husband have insurance coverage through his employer which we pay for. I am currently unemployed and my husband is our only income. The medical bills our insurance did not cover are overwhelming and the payments the hospital wants are far more than we can afford. We dont want to loose everything we own because we fall in the small crack where we make just a little too much to be considered poverty level so we cant receive any help. Funny thing is our local hospital has ads on television here begging for donations so they can build a new breast cancer center for women. Unfortunatly they dont care if your sick or not--they want their money and have no compassion what so ever when it comes to collecting it. We cannot afford any more medical bills and have therefore refused to have radiation or chemo treatments untill what we already owe is paid off. I could not live with myself knowing the tremendous amount of debt I would burden my husband with. The debt now is over $4000.00 which doesnt seem like alot to some people but when you live from week to week, paycheck to paycheck as we do, coming up with that right away is impossible. Please email me and I can explain the whole situation to you in better detail. This experience has shattered me--everyday a collection agency calls I am just crying and crying because I dont know what to do--I simply cant afford to pay them what they want us to pay. Now they are going to try and garnish my husbands paycheck--our world and all we have worked so hard for will be gone if this happens as we cannot afford to loose $50-$100.00 per week. We barely make it as it is now. Please help--I dont know what to do!
