How Much Time is the Ball in Play During Baseball Game?
In 1956 a sports reporter for the Kansas City Star wanted to find out how long the ball was in play during a major league baseball game--- how much action took place. So Dick Wade took a stopwatch to a game on 6/21/1956 between the KC A's and the Washington Senators. He timed how long it took the ball to leave the pitchers hand until the play was over---either by a call from the umpire or an out in the field. Even the home runs were counted as in play until they left the park. The game lasted two hours and 38 minutes. The action? The action of the ball in play was only nine minutes and 55 seconds. The A's won the game 15-6. Then to compare a current baseball game with that one in 1956, the time was measured at a game on 6/21/2006 between the KC Royals and Pittsburgh Pirates. The game lasted two hours and 39 minutes. The action lasted just nine minutes and nine seconds. The Royals won the game 6-4. Source: Kansas City Star Magazine.
