No more thickeners!!!
Great to find this site. My grandmother has advanced Parkinson's, affects her ability to swallow. She has been on thickened drinks and pureed foods for a while. Lately she is refusing drinks as the thickener makes everything terrible. What are alternatives? Thanks, Julie |

Hi Julie Have you contacted your local speech and language therapist? I am a therapist and regularly suggest a thickener but always work closely with the family with regards to how to use it. If you don't know their number see if your GP knows. Alison |

Hi Julie We don't have anything really like that in the UK; but maybe some of the other users might have some ideas? Bananas are good for thickening a smoothie; but I don't really know of any other. Claire |

Hi Julie, sorry I can;t be of too much help as ive not been on thickners myself (have seen them used in uk hospitals lots of times though), have you tried her on things like jelly which isn't a liquid but not really a solid either? Assume the thickner was perscribed, could they give you any advice? I was told complan (http://www.complanfoods.com/range.php) do thick liquids which taste far nicer, and would give her a bit of a break of everything tasting like the thickner. Take care, viks |
