Would anyone be willing to recommend some reference material on Tang Soo Do etiquette?

Re: Do Jang Etiquette

Here are some excerpts from my school manual that you may find helpful.

Etiquette for Students:

1. Students should train hard and try to make their technique stronger at every class.

2. Students should thank their instructor(s) every time that they teach you something new.

3. When late for class, a student should warm-up in the back of the training area. When appropriate, ask permission to enter the class and take the last position in line.

4. A student requesting permission to enter, exit or re-enter class should not interrupt the Instructor or the class.

5. When leaving the line, the student will take 1 step backwards and move to the right.

6. Students are expected to attend all Test Classes even if the student is not testing.

7. When lining up, a student should be running to get in their place quickly and should immediately stand in “Attention Stance” with eyes focused forward.

8. The outward signs of a disciplined Martial Artist are; Standing Still, Eyes Forward, Strong Stances, Tight Fists, and Concentrating on instructions.

9. When sitting for prayer and mediation, the front line sits down first and when the last person has sat down the remainder of the class may sit. When standing the class stands after all the students in the front row have stood.

10. When sitting, the student’s legs must be folded with hands placed on the knees and backs straight. A student never touches or leans against objects or walls.

11. A student is expected to take care of their personal needs before class. Repeated requests to leave class will result in not being granted permission to re-enter class.

12. In respect to other students, a person addressed directly more than once during a class may be asked to sit out the remainder of the class. At the end of the class the student shall locate the instructor and discuss the situation.

13. Asking the Instructor questions during class is generally considered inappropriate however, a student may ask for clarification to the specific lesson being taught by first raising their hand. General questions should be asked to a senior first and then the senior will answer or get the answer for you.

14. Students must refrain from appearance of correcting an instructor during class. After class the student and class instructor should discreetly discuss the issue and if resolution cannot be reached then a senior belt should be approached for resolution.

15. During sparring or judging a form or break, a student never discusses or comments on a judge’s call.

16. Uniforms must be neat and clean at all times.

17. Smoking by students on property is not permitted.

18. Students are to line-up by rank as posted on the attendance sheet.

19. We feel that as a matter of practice, everyone should refer to others as Sir and Ma’am.

20. When a Black Belt enters the training area, any student may announce “Attention” at the next appropriate break in action. The highest-ranking belt in the class will then greet the Black Belt for the class.

21. If the student has not attended class for more than one week, the student should request permission from the instructor to re-enter training with a very brief explanation on why they missed class.

Etiquette for Guests:

1. Guests should stand for the Salute to the American Flag and remain silent through prayers.

2. Guests are asked not enter the training area during class.

3. Guests must refrain from activity that may be distracting to the class.

4. Unless there is an emergency, guests should not address students or instructors throughout the class.

Martial Arts Courtesy

Most Martial Arts schools use the Asian Military model for conducting class but here at the Christian Karate Academy we use the USA Military format. In respect of the proud heritage and tradition of the Asian martial Arts, we do oriental bowing as our military salute. In the analogy of the US Military, Black Belts represent Commissioned Officers, Red Belts represent Warrant Officers (NCO’s) and Green Belts represent Non-Commissioned Officers (NCO).

1. Greeting Black Belts:

When an Officer (Black Belt) enters a room. The first to see the person shouts "Attention on Deck" and the Officer (Black Belt) will stop and acknowledge the room and say, "As you were".

2. To begin class:

 "Fall-In" or “Line-Up” - All soldiers line up
 "Attention" - class comes to order
 Turn and Face the Flag of the United States of America - "Salute" - "Return"
 "Sit" - Bible Reading and Memory verse
 "Prayer and Meditation" - silence by all students and guests
 "Attention" - Everyone stand
 "Ready" - Start exercises and count in English

3. To end class:

 "Fall-In" - All soldiers line up
 Turn and Face the Flag of the United States of America - "Salute" - "Return"
 Attention - Ten Virtues of the Christian Solider
 "Prayer and Meditation" - silence by all students and guests
 "At Ease" - Announcements (remain as still and respectful as possible but relaxed)
 "Attention, Salute, Class dismissed" - Class take one step back and fall out

4. Entering and leaving the training area:

 If Flag is Flying - come to Attention, Face the Flag and Salute
 If Flag is not Flying - Face where the Flag is normally at Attention Stance for a few seconds
