Epinephrine for anaphylaxis and MC...

So....I can't just have MC. I also have exercise-induced anaphylaxis. Anyhow, this condition almost never requires an epi-pen injection, but I'm supposed to keep one with me just in case. However, I also get chest muscle spasms with the onset of exercise with my MC, soooooooooo I'm a bit worried about how my body would react if given an epi-pen shot. Any info on epi-pens and MC?

Reya, I had my doctor write a prescription for the pediatric Epi-Pen (it comes in a 2-pack). I knew if I had to use the adult version the myotonia would be terrible and make it harder to breathe because of stiffness of the diaphragm.

I'll bring that up with the allergist!

Another question....will epiphedrine even work with us at all????

Or does it have a paradoxical reaction, like depolarizing anesthesia????

It works just like it would for anyone else, but it also causes a huge shift in electrolytes because of the "fight or flight" response and that is what makes us very stiff. Be sure to wear Medic Alert jewelry and put in your file online that epinephrine can exacerbate myotonia.

Will do. So it's probably not life-threatening, then, which is cool! If it just causes pain, well, pain's better than dying from anaphylactic shock. :)

I actually just ordered my medic alert bracelet because I hadn't been aware of the cardiac arrest danger in addition to the MH danger. That was the tipping point for me! The official Medic Alert stuff doesn't have room for all my diagnoses--exercise-induced anaphylaxis is kinda long. So I got an unofficial one and will be carrying a wallet card, too, with better info.
