Re: Mexilitene OD & Ramblings (Sodium Channel vs. Chloride Channel) & Steroids

My son has Thomsen's myotonia (along with me and his sister) & last year he fell and ended up with bad shoulder problems and his orthopedic doctor gave him a cortisone shot to help his shoulder. Initially (1 day) it made his myotonia much worse but then after a few days it made a huge positive difference in his walking and lasted about 3 months. I would caution you that when my son was young and was put on Prednisone that the next day he could not hardly move so I had been telling doctors for years not to give him any related medicines and it was only because I was not there that the doctor unknowingly gave him cortisone with surprisingly good results. I was told however that the side effects are too serious to use it as any kind of maintenance medicine for myotonia. Hope that helps.

Type of Myotonia: Thomsen

Country: USA
