Grading and Assessment

I would be interested to hear from anyone regarding how they grade in their classes, particularly at the elementary level. Due to the large number of students I see, checklists have worked best for me. I am not a fan of skill tests as I think it puts a lot of pressure on young students to perform a skill. I am more concerned about the process than I am the outcome. For example, I would rather know that they student understands how to shoot a free throw opposed to seeing if they can make 8 out of 10. I have started using more self and peer assessments. Are they any apps that have been of assistance in grading?

Re: Grading and Assessment

We use some rubrics on different skills that we found, which we cover during the year and we try to assess the students following those guidelines. We also have the students do some self assessments at the end of classes, sometimes on effort /sportsmanship, and other times it be on a skill. We don't do assess everyday, but at least once a week.

We have not found any apps that would help us at an elementary level yet. I guess I should develop one.

Re: Grading and Assessment

I teach a fitness class for grades 7/8. I feel like I have finally come up with a system that accurately determines their grade.
1. 5 points a day for being on time, being in proper clothing, participation.
2. They have a 10 point YouTube assignment. Assigned on Monday due by Friday. Usually deals with character traits and parents are involved with these as well.
3. They have a weekly heart rate monitor grade.
4. They have a distance to achieve on a treadmill, elliptical, bike or rower. .
That is 55 points per week and is performance based. Takes any guess work out of it. The grade they get is what they earn.
