Re: Discussion Number One (1)

I would define educational technology as any teaching tool used to help deliver instruction more effectively through non-traditional methods. Educational technology involves teaching through all learning styles at once, auditory, kinesthetic and verbal. My experience with technology in P.E. is much greater than I first realized. I have experience using heart rate monitors, GPS units (hand-held and watches), video, videotaping, using the Wii, music and video, powerpoints, imovie as well as the Internet on a daily basis.
I would like to learn about new and different types of technology that I can continue to use in my classes through this course. I also love that I get to discuss what is going on in other districts and schools around the country. I look forward to hearing and learning from others in my profession. In addition, I am always looking for new ideas for grant writing opportunities, and adding technology to a grant seems to be a recipe for success!

Re: Discussion Number One (1)

Educational technology is any use of technology that can be used as a form of learning. There are many different ways technology can enhance education. In the physical education/coach setting it can be done through computers, internet sites, heart rate monitors, pedometers, etc. In this course, I hope to discover new ways in which I can use technology to improve my teaching and also increase the motivation of students in physical education. I am hoping that I can take my class outside of the gym and be able to interact with my students in a virtual setting.

Re: Discussion Number One (1)

In my opinion, educational technology is technology that is used to enhance or better deliver the educational content of a lesson or activity that a teacher is presenting. This educational technology often allows a teacher to better reach and relate to their students. Students today are born into a digital world. They learn the ins and outs about technology from a very young age. We as teachers must keep up with this technology if we are going to retain their attention in the classroom.

I have used technology in many different facets of my life. In physical education however, I have not used technology for much more than playing music or videos, or to record students steps with the use of pedometers. I have used stop watches and heart rate monitors some but not to the capacity to which I know they can be used.

I hope to develop some new ideas for my physical education curriculum. I have access to iPads now at my school and I know I can be utilizing those in my fitness classroom. I would also like to develop some new creative ways to use older technology that I had been using.

Re: Discussion Number One (1)

Educational technology, at one point in our history, referred to the pencil that can be sharpened or the ball point pen. Both represented tools that advanced, improved, enabled the educational process - or at least, changed it. Those of us who went to school in the 70's and 80's would recognize the typewriter, eraser paper, electric typewriters and automatic erasing as tremendous advancements that helped us through school. Those pale in comparison to what "technology" has available for us as educators and students today. In real terms, the world has opened up to us and exploring it is at our fingertips. We have more tools available to us than we know what to do with.

My goal in taking this class is to get an overview of the types of technology available to me, and to begin the creative process of finding which ones I can "bring" into the gym that will enhance student learning.

Re: Discussion Number One (1)

In it's most broad sense "educational technology" is anything that can assist teachers or students in the learning process. It can be used to clarify information, expand on education, or evaluate education. However, the one thing we can not lose sight of is the fact that is can't replace education. While technology is designed to make our life easier in many ways (and it does make teaching easier in many ways), it can't be used just to entertain kids or as the sole way students attain their knowledge. When used effectively, technology not only entertains students, but keeps them engaged in learning and supplements what the teacher is trying to get accomplished. It has almost become cliche by now, but technology has certainly made the world smaller. Information on anything is a click away. The ways in which we can show our students how their knowledge is being applied in the real world is limitless.
My own personal experience with technology is fairly good. My biggest weakness is that I've never had any direction from anyone else in how to use technology in PE classes, so most of my knowledge has come from trial and error. From a logistical stand point I have used Excel as my main bookkeeping resource. I use it to record grades, create percentile charts, among many other things. I have used LCD projectors and laptop computers at times in classes. From a coaching standpoint I probably have used technology a little bit more. Mainly from editing game film and using the Hudl website and software to review film. Most good coaches are quick to embrace good technology because of how it can help them make better use of their time.
With the knowledge acquired from this class, one goal I hope to attain it to more effectively use handheld computer devices in my classes. This is the new "big thing" in education and I think there are many potential benefits to use IPhones, IPods, and IPads in class. The flexibility of the apps and other uses makes them a great resource. Another thing I wish to accomplish is to see how other teachers are making themselves better at their craft.

Re: Discussion Number One (1)

I believe that technology is a tool to assist in learning. It should be used to become more efficient at a certain task. Technology can also help learning become more fun and interesting to students. Forget TV and Radio, this generation does not now life without computer and touch screen technology. They touch it, it appear like magic. You do not have to rewind anything anymore. Technology can have a negative effect as well. I am seeing more kids use it to be lazy and less efficient. Our school district has spent so much money on technology. It is amazing how much technology we have but our test scores are actually worse than the schools around us. Our MS and HS students use it more for recreation than a learning tool. It can be a distraction, if it is allowed to be one.

We use technology for numerous things. We use it to assess students. The students use it to self assess. Data Collection, Attendance, Medical Info., Demographics, Video Analysis, and multiple applications. We like to GarageBand our music for stations.

Technology Devices we use: Computers,iPads,iPod,iPhone,Pedometers,Radio,Wireless Microphone System,Smartboard,
TV,DVD player, Scoreboards, and more.

Re: Discussion Number One (1)

Education technology encompasses so much. There are so many tools out there that help all types of students learn. Ipads, computers, audio equipment, pedometers, cameras etc. There is no one type learner. Technology is here for all to use to assist and guide the learner.
In my P.E class, I use music,an audio system so that all students can hear and I also use my Ipad when appropriate. I am really starting to branch out into different ways of bringing technology into my classes and this course will hopefully give me new ideas on how to do that.

Re: Discussion Number One (1)

Educational technologies can assist students in physical education classes by providing a more creative and motivating way to engage in physical activity.
In my PE classes I use music from an ipod/stereo to start and stop activities/tasks. I have started to use xbox/Kinect in my dance units that requires a projector and screen. I have also received a grant for Fitnessgram to be recorded online database. This will record the students scores and keep them from 5th grade until 12th grade.

I have started to use my ipad for coaching soccer. There are several apps that allow you to input rosters and positions and use the ipad to demonstrate drills and plays for practice and games.

I hope to learn new ways to incorporate technology into my PE classes and any new ideas/concepts would be great.

Re: Discussion Number One (1)

I teach K-4 and I also use music in class quite a bit. The music helps create the mood for the activity and also helps with transitions from one activity to the next. I also find it helps with the atmosphere of inclusion. Behavior that is off task for whatever reason seems to be \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"glossed over\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" by the music and the other students can easily stay on task instead of fixating on the behavior.

I am seriously looking into getting a projector and screen to add variety and interest to my curriculum. Creating a PowerPoint slide for instance and have it on in the background with all the instructions and important aspects of the activity would be very helpful. Also there are a lot of free online resources I could project for the students to enjoy and learn.

I can envision videoing students creating tumbling routines and playing it back on the screen for all to see, they would love that! I am also interested in trying to get funding for a Bluetooth speaker to play music in class.

Re: Discussion Number One (1)

To me "Education Technology" is any type of technology that can be used to enhance the education of students and or teachers. there are different types of technology that can be used in the school setting along with at home. For the fitnessgram testing that we do, we recieved a grant and now upload our scores to the NFL play 60 website. I have also used a web page on the school website to promote and advocate for our PE program. Have used digital cameras and my iphone to take pictures to upload to our website. There are links to other sites along with valuable information about our program as well on our web page. For coaching i have used video taping and a website called Krossover.com that helps to break down game film so that my coaching staff and players can watch film at any time.

I hope to increase my knowledge of technology and to discover new and exciting ways to incorporate more technology into my PE program

Re: Discussion Number One (1)

To me educational technology is the use of technology to assist, improve, or innovate educational techniques. I have seen technology improve the processes like attendance, discipline referrals, and grades. Technology has allowed parents to get information on their students progress and have a real time picture of their child's grade. Technology has given students a way to express their creativity. In sports I have seen technology improve player performance by video analysis, team performance by scouting technologies, and coaching performance by having access to unlimited coaching information. My plan for this course is to continue to learn new and creative ways to teach my students and give them the best chance for success.

Re: Discussion Number One (1)

Educational technology involves using the various tools available to enhance the classroom environment. It affords the teacher as well as the student the opportunity to use current equipment and machinery in the classroom. It is constantly changing for the better. Years ago a chalkboard was considered technology. Now we have iPads, smart phones, smart boards, etc. to take advantage of. I have used technology in the classroom as well as on the field as a coach. I have had a lot of experience with power point, video taping, heart rate monitors, the wii, laptops, etc., and now am trying to incorporate iPads into the classroom. While completing this course I hope to identify several different methods of technology that I can apply to my PE classroom. Technology is fascinating and it grabs the students’ attention. By integrating more technology into the classroom I hope to draw students in, and motivate them to do better.

Re: Discussion Number One (1)

Educational technology is the ability to develop lessons and activities using different types of technology to enhance the learning process. I have used many different forms of technology in PE and in coaching. The computer has become my best friend either with Word Documents, PowerPoints, showing YouTube clips, grading, and many more. I hope to accomplish other ways to enhance my ways of using technology in my lessons. I would love to bring new ideas to the classroom.

Re: Discussion Number One (1)

My definition of "Educational Technology" is the advancement of learning with the aid and guidance of technological resources such as computers, internet, ipads, and other technological devices. Students can have a collection of books on a single device such as a kindle. Video games have become more than just a stationary form of entertainment. Students have the opportunity be physically active and still enjoy the video games they love to play. I have used a variety of technology during my tenure as teacher and coach. The use of a computer has become commonplace in both areas. I keep a multiple amount of documents save to files on my computer for both teaching and coaching. I have used the XBOX system, which is a popular video game console as a tool to help kids stay physically active. My objective for this course is to gain further knowledge of other technological advances that will help improve my teaching and coaching career.

Re: Discussion Number One (1)

The term "education technology" means using technology in education. It means using tools available that are new and innovative. I think that using educational technology keeps our students interested. The students have embraced technology and I feel that the more we as teachers are in tune with today's technology the more the students will participate in our classes. I have used power points, videos, laptops, pedometers, Fitbits, and websites in my classrooms. In coaching I have used the iPad and different apps for keeping statistics for my team. We have also purchased "The Gun" as a tool to help with our shooting ability.
I hope to learn more about the technology of today. I know there is a lot to learn and I am ready for the challenge.
I love technology and I love to pass my passion of technology onto my students.

Re: Discussion Number One (1)

Wow it really sounds like you are ahead of the game with using technology in PE class! What would be some examples of how the students are engaging in the powerpoints etc.? Are they sitting and watching, is it in the background as a reminder of your instruction? What sort of technological delivery do you think would be appropriate for K-4 students?

I am getting some money from our local Rotary club when I go back to school in a couple of weeks. Hopefully they will allow me to purchase technology. I have a budget of $2500. I was thinking of getting a projector, video camera, IPad, bluetooth speaker and a cloud site subscription that has a ton of information on it. I priced it out and it is all possible.
I am keeping my fingers crossed and am going to use the information from this course to justify it.

Re: Discussion Number One (1)

Educational Technology is any teaching tool, normally involving computers or media, that can be used to help convey an instructors message to the students. Technology is becoming very prominent in wellness education. Many PE teachers have used pedometers, as I have, but now technology seems to be growing quickly with it's uses in the gym and becoming a common teaching aid for many. I have had large success' with technology uses such as GPS units, pedometers, video skill review, and am now experimenting with some applications for my new ipad. I have enjoyed using video reply apps such as Ubersense and Time Lapse to allow students to self evaluate, along with using a mounted GoPro in our climbing unit and on our mt. biking trail. I hope find more uses for technology, especially regarding student usage of smartphones (QR Code, GPS, etc) and or my ipad mini for teaching purposes.

Re: Discussion Number One (1)

Hi Rick,

I have limited use of technology in my class but I noticed that you have a GPS unit so I was wondering if you could explain what you do in that unit.

Thanks,

James Orrson

Re: Discussion Number One (1)

“Educational technology” is the use of current resources, which helps teachers use current technology in each lesson in order to achieve higher student learning. This technology includes computers, smart boards, grading systems with up to date process, along with twitter and blogs for outside class information.
Unfortunately I currently do not use technology in my physical education class so I am taking this course in order to find out how I can implement different technology in my classes.

Re: Discussion Number One (1)

The term “educational technology” can mean many different things. To me, it refers to the use of innovative resources to improve teaching and support learning. These resources can be as small as a microchip for storing data, or as large as a treadmill used for cardio fitness training.

My experience with technology has evolved throughout the years, from using a stopwatch as a timer, to using pedometers to measure steps and distances traveled. Our school utilizes an electronic grading program, our gym is equipped with a big screen, projector, and sound system, and our fitness room has treadmills and stationary bikes with computers to track speeds, distances and levels. These advancements in technology have been a tremendous benefit to my physical education program.

In this class I hope to learn ways to implement technology into my daily lessons. As our district moves to a new teacher evaluation system, based on the Danielson Model of Teaching, a strong emphasis is placed on the use of technology. Domain 3c states, “Teacher creates an environment in which students make use of technology to enhance their own learning and create their own products.” This is an excellent level of performance, which is my goal. : )

Re: Discussion Number One (1)

Your facility sounds great. We are currently building a new weight room at my high school. The hope is we convert the current weight room into a fitness room. Your facility sounds like something we could model.

Re: Discussion Number One (1)

To me educational technology is what we as educators can implement into our classrooms to advance them. Examples of this would be using tools given to us such as computers, iPads, apps, pedometers, web quests, and many more. We take that information adjust it and create it for our specific classroom needs and put it into action whether it's physical education or health classrooms.

As for my experience with the use of technology....I had considered myself "tech savvy" until taking this course....of which my mind was blown away with all that it encompasses. Throughout this course I'm hoping to take the knowledge gained and implement it into my curriculum and classroom.

Re: Discussion Number One (1)

Educational technology is the use of new technology to enhance student learning and assessment. The many facets of educational technology include the computers, the Internet, word processing, Power point, videos, and audios. In Physical Education, the items include pedometers, heart rate monitors, smart phone applications and much more. I have used pedometers and heart rate monitors in Phys Ed class for about 5 years now. I have incorporated student data sheets on a computer with these as well. In coaching, I have used Excel spreadsheets to collect and tract statistics for my teams. I have archived stats for the last 16 years so I can compile a "History" for my program. Team leaders for individual seasons and career have been established with this use.
I feel like I have a pretty decent grip on technology. I hope to enhance and build upon this knowledge so i can continue to adapt to student needs. I don't want to get passed by the students. They seem to know more and more about technology every day.

Re: Discussion Number One (1)

Educational technology is the ability to use technology to improve an individual's learning using a variety of equipment. As a coach, we have used video to prepare for future competitions by evaluating opposing players, techniques and team strategies. This allowed us to be better prepared as coaches to ensure that we provided our players with the best opportunity to play at a competitive level. Also, using game video allowed us to evaluate our own play and better align practices to work on the skills needed as a team, and as individual players, to improve as a whole.
In this course through reading, discussion, and message boards, I hope to find new strategies to incorporate technology into my physical education programs that will be the most beneficial to my students.

Re: Discussion Number One (1)

The term “educational technology” means using technology effectively in learning, especially in schools. Educational technology can be media, machines, and networking hardware. When I think of educational technology I think of the use of audio, videos, CD-ROM, cameras, computers, tablets, mobile devices, social networks, webcams, smartboards, and virtual classrooms.

I feel I have quite a bit of experience with technology because I grew up with it. In all of my physical education classes I use music to motivate my students to be active throughout the class period. Also, I have a camera that myself as well as the students use to take pictures during particular classes so we have candids of students being active. During certain units I have used YouTube videos and a projector to show students a new game, skill, or drill so they have a visual of what I am talking about. In grades 3-5 students have used iPads to videotape themselves performing particular skills so they can assess their performance against the skill cues and skill rubrics. I have used these videotapes as well to see where students have weaknesses and what skill aspects I need to focus more time on. In physical education I have my students in grades 6 & 7 wear pedometers to track how many steps they take throughout a class period and how many miles they have covered. They track this in a log every class period. In grade 6 I have students use laptops during my Picnic Games unit. The students need to use the Internet to research a picnic game, type up the history and rules of the game in a document, and then teach it to the class. In grade 7 I have students use laptops during my Create Your Own Game unit. The students need to be creative and come up with a new game, type the rules and objective into a document, and then teach it to the class.

In this course I hope to learn some new ways teachers are incorporating technology into their everyday physical education classes. Sadly, the school I work at recently got rid of the technology program because of budget cuts. I feel like it is my responsibility to expose kids to technology because that is where the future is headed. Also, I believe technology is a great teaching tool to help students learn in physical education. In this class I hope to learn about technology grants that are out there to help get more technology resources for my classes. Lastly, I hope this class will help me make some new connections through networking with teachers from all over as well.

Re: Discussion Number One (1)

Educational technology is any avenue that can enhance student learning. It is also a valuable tool and resource for teachers. My experience with technology has been slow. In my school we are finally in the 21st century. I will finally be able to incorporate some heart rate monitors in my classes. After learning about all the software available from this course, I am excited to try new things.

Re: Discussion Number One (1)

In your own words define the term "educational technology" and describe its many facets. What is your own experience with the use of technology in physical education and/or coaching? What do you hope to accomplish in this course?

Educational technology can have many forms from something as simple as a learning video to using computers, IPads and phones to aid in the learning process. The definition would be simply, the use of technology tools to aid in educational purposes.

I have not done much with technology in my classes except with some computer assignments. I have been researching how to implement technology in a proper manner for my classes. I hope to try out an assignment or two in my classes this year.

In this course I hope to gain the desired knowledge and information to help myself and my students utilize their 21st century skills.

Re: Discussion Number One (1)

In your own words define the term "educational technology" and describe its many facets. What is your own experience with the use of technology in physical education and/or coaching? What do you hope to accomplish in this course?

"Educational Technology" is the use of tools for teaching and learning. These tools can be anything from a cell phone to a speaker to a heartrate monitor to an electronic white board. There are countless ways to use technology for educational purposes.

My experiences with the use of technology in physical education are endless. One example is for daily lessons in our weight room. The room is equiped with a sound system and speakers that can connect to student phones, ipods, ipads, teacher devices, computers etc.
The room also has a video monitor that connects to teacher ipads, pds, and computers. This is used for daily lesson objectives, watching dvds and videos, apps such as Coach's Eye and Yoga Studio, student vidoe assessment, etc.
We also have ipads and computers for all staff and students. Students use apps on their own personal devices to track workouts, weights, progress, etc.
Students use apps to help with pacing for running/walking, track distance and effort in run/walks and for music to motivate.
We use online polls for assessment of student learning and preassement before many lessons. I could go on and on.

I am hoping to extend my personal knowledge on technology and PE through this course. It would be nice to collaborate with other teachers to learn what they are using in their schools.

Re: Discussion Number One (1)

Jennifer, WOW, good for you and the school you are at. I am amazed after reading your post how up to date the weight room is for your students use. Your current situation is what most of us would dream about. I hope you are having a good experience with all that you and your students have available.
I share a similar interest in networking with other teachers who have access to similar resources. With some healthy collaboration the sky is the limit for your students. Do you have any limitations or concerns with the level of technology you are using?

George

Re: Discussion Number One (1)

educational technology is any form of technology used to instruct or enhance the learning environment. In our PE classes we use, I phones for attendance and email. We use computers and projectors for PowerPoint presentations and videos. Our students are allowed to use their cell phones for research on projects in class as we don't always have access to the laptop carts that the school has. We use televisions to show videos that enhance the learning of students by showing how what we are talking about in class can play out in the real world.

Re: Discussion Number One (1)

"Educational technology" is the effective use of technology for learning in school systems. The technology tools can include media, machines and networking hardware. The tools can be applied in different ways to meet the needs of students, the school requirements and to benefit the effectiveness of the teacher. It is important for teachers to be educated on the types of technology available to them in their schools and to keep informed on the tremendous improvements, applications, and impact technology has made on students on a daily basis.

In the past, I was very limited with technology at the schools I worked at with many budget cuts. But I used a lot of my personal technology to keep organized and it made my teaching more effective. When I taught my dance lessons I used my computer to mix music, create cues, and made videos of student work. In other lessons I would use my iPad to input data into the grading system my school used. This I found to be easier than writing down what I observed and adding it into the system after class. If I continued in this school system I would have requested a purchase of this technology for my department to eliminate the use of my personal technology.

I am in a new school system-this is my second year at this high school. By taking this course, I hope to learn about new technology available and ways to apply the technology to my physical education classes. As new new teacher in my department I hope to find ways to improve my department., curriculum and methods of instruction. I would like to pass on information I find to my colleagues. As I am in my seventh year of teaching. I feel it is important to use technology as much as possible as long as it is in a positive and appropriate way. I would like to learn about new applications (apps) to be applied in physical education classes and in coaching.

Re: Discussion Number One (1)

In my opinion, the term educational technology is the use of electronic devices to help a person learn. Educational technology is a very broad term that changes everyday as the industry evolves. It can be something as basic as a digital gradebook and advanced as a slow-motion camera that gives instant feedback. In the physical education setting I have used technology to track heart rate, steps, record movement/form for assessment, provide instructional video, and have used a video game system to teach the students dance. Technology has also provided me a means to allow remote collaboration (Google Docs/Classroom) and to connect with other physical educators around the world (Twitter).

Through this course I hope to learn new ways to incorporate technology into physical education classes to hook/motivate the 21st century learner. Since I am teaching elementary students I'd like to find uses that are easy to implement so that the students can take control of their learning.

Re: Discussion Number One (1)

Although I teach high school students, I also feel that technology is a must for the 21st century learner. Students are so connected to electronics that without incorporating current and new technology students can lose interest quickly. Also with the instant connections through twitter and other forms students and teachers can stay up to date with colleagues around the world.

Re: Discussion Number One (1)

Educational technology is anything that has electronic functions, traditional or nontraditional, which may be used to help students learn. In an "academic" classroom setting this in the past has included computers, projectors, tvs, and dvd players(or vhs tape players previously). In the gymnasium Physical education teachers are now using a myriad of technology. We have used the previous items and sound systems for years. Now with the prices and advancement of technology we use heart rate monitors and other wearable technology, step counters, IPADs or other tablets, a ton of apps for many activities, hand held gps, and cameras for both video analysis of skills and for strategic adjustments in games.
In this class I hope to expand my use of some of these technologies to engage my students and for them to realize that there are many ways to use technology to increase their fitness not just for entertainment.

Re: Discussion Number One (1)

Educational Technology to me refers to any electronic devices that can aid in execution of a lesson or inspiration for a student to discover an avenue toward success of the content provided. Any technology that assists with the learning outcome or the environment the student is in would be considered educational.

From clocks to GPS systems, as I use in PE, students are continually given more instant feedback on their performance. We can use a variety of apps on our smart device to aid in keeping track of time or digitizing our skills for an analysis with slow motion video. I never thought about it before, but I use technology in my classroom and on the field everyday. My smart phone can email or call a students parent immediately from our school's system and be used a moment later with an app that will change teams randomly, and again with only a change of the icon switch to "Coach's Eye" to evaluate a baseball swing. Think of the equipment that we would have needed for that all to happen 15 years ago. There are more resources out there than I can use in a given unit or season. I enjoy learning about newer tools to help improve my teaching and coaching.

I hope to accomplish a continuing familiarity with different technology as to improve my comfort levels and likelihood I will add these technology tools to my classroom and training facility to improve my student/athlete's experience. I want to learn new "tricks of the trade" too!

Re: Discussion Number One (1)

Hey George,

I also have used coach's eye to evaluate student skills/performance and to give instant feedback. My students enjoy getting that instant feedback on what did well and what need to improve. What are your thoughts on the app? Do you use any other apps for providing feedback?

Re: Discussion Number One (1)

Educational technology is the use of tools, techniques and processes to enhance student learning. Technology in the classroom can be used in various ways. Technology used in Education helps to increase student motivation, enhance teaching practice and promote critical thinking. Students enjoy the use of technology in physical education classes, especially the use of step counters, iPads and dance videos. Teaching practices are enhanced by technology to organize planning, use visual aids to increase student learning and for assessment purposes. Technology can be used to help students think critically. Apps on the iPad can increase student learning.

My first experiences with technology was the use of heart rate monitors and step counters. Recently, I received a grant for 1 to 1 iPads for all my students. I have used several apps for the iPad such as swork-it, balance it, i-muscle, coaches eye and seesaw. I use the apps to evaluate student's skill level, for instant activities and to store student work. The use of iPads has made it easier to integrate reading, writing and math in my curriculum.

I hope to enhance my knowledge of using technology in the classroom by researching various tools, reading what other educators are currently doing and evaluating common trends.
