FDNY thawing units

HI

was just wondering what does a thawing unit do in the fdny. ??

Location: Europe

Re: FDNY thawing units

Thaws out frozen hydrants covered in the snow/sleet.....and consequently allows hoses that do freeze to hydrant connections to be de-thawed and removed after the fire fighting operation is complete.

Re: FDNY thawing units

So HOW does the unit thaw out hydrants and couplings, etc.

Is the FDNY the only fire department to have these units?

Re: FDNY thawing units

I know Boston has/had them..... Popular in New England where you get the snow/cold. Never seen one in action.

Re: FDNY thawing units

We have a city truck with a steamer attached to it and unthaw with steam and pour alcohol (methyl hydrate) on the frozen parts
