Fargo's Gonna Be More Than A Movie!

From this morning's (Sunday, June 28th, 2009) FARGO FORUM Sunday Newspaper...

"Calling all collectors! Be on the lookout for a small black and white Police Cruiser. Make: Mattel. Model: Possibly a Ford Crown Victoria, Chevrolet Impala or a Dodge Durango. Jurisdiction: F-A-R-G-O.

On Monday night (June 29th), the Fargo City Commission is expected to sign off on a deal that will allow California-based toymaker Mattel, Inc., to put the Fargo Police Department's emblem on some of its tiny collectible cars.

Police Keith Ternes said Friday that the city hasn't been spinning its wheels on closing the deal, proposed several months ago, but oficials have been caught up in all the issues swirling around this year's flood fight.

"We're kind of humbled by the fact that they want to use the Fargo Police emblem on the cars," Ternes said. "It gives us a sense of pride."

Rob Novickas, Mattel's assistant manager of public relations, said the cars would likely be the company's Hot Wheels or Matchbox 1/64th scale toys, but he could not determine which because no one in that division was available to answer questions on Friday.

Novickas said Mattel has a policy of not releasing figures on the number of any particular collectible car created.

In return for the right to use the city's emblem on the die-cast or plastic cars, the city will receive 200 of the toys, Ternes said. They'll be distributed to officers on patrol and in schools, and the crime prevention bureau.

"When they (the officers) go out and have interaction with kids, they'll give them away," Ternes said. "It won't take us long to go through 200 of them."

And, just for the record, color wise, Fargo's police cars have an all black front end, white four-door & roof area, and a black rear end.

No date was given for the release.
