SAVE THE BEACH

SAVE THE BETZET BEACH

Ex Volunteers and Ulpan people will probably remember with fondness the sandy beach just south of Rosh Hanikra. In fact it’s the northernmost beach in Israel of the coastal strip running from Rosh Hanikra down to Nahariya. It’s one of the last free public beaches in the country and has been frequented by Matzuva members and volunteer/ulpan guests over many decades. The Betzet wadi runs into the sea at this point.

Recently it has come to our notice that the Israel Land Authority has approved the transfer of 206 dunam (approx. 50 acres) of beach to the south of Rosh Hanikra to private entrepreneurs in order to establish three holiday villages (1,300 rooms!), an artificial lake and commercial enterprises (36,000 sq. meters) with building possibilities of 57,000 square meters.

This enterprise will bring about irreversible damage to this area depriving present and future generations access to the natural beach. The environmental damage will cause air and water pollution and damage irreparably the natural beach with its rocks and lagoons.

The organizers of the petition need at least 10,000 signatures to try and stop this catastrophe to this beautiful shore.
If you feel like we do please go to the sight (Hebrew site - link below) giving your name and place of abode. There is a box below to leave comments if you wish.

This beach area is very popular to residents of the Western Galilee and beyond who enjoy swimming and fishing or just lazing on the beach.

This development plan is based on a program devised 15 years ago but was never implemented since its approval in 1992 and is full of serious flaws and inaccuracies.
PLEASE HELP STOP THIS PLAN!

In conclusion, but no less important, the program was not presented to residents of Western Galilee, who chose to live in the area and to benefit from the beauty and quiet that it offers. Also the wider public that arrives to the area to enjoy its fantastic natural beauty were also not made aware of this project.
