The Olden Days

What were some of the foods you ate when you were a kid that we don't see much or at all today?

I remember a glass of milk with leftover rice in it and a pinch of sugar. What did you eat?

Re: The Olden Days

I ate Gingerbread logs from the bakery when I was a child in Houma, La. Where can I buy these in around Galveston Texas or South La.? Or how can I make them?

We ate delicious rice pudding made from the left over rice from the day before. We also had rice, green onions and eggs that were scrambled for breakfast. My family being from New Orleans had rice on the stove everyday, no matter what the menu was.My mother fixed chicken & Shrimp Gumbo in addition to her delicious seafood gumbos, weiners, onions in a seasoned tomatoe sauce, and this was served with white fluffy rice as well. Little did I know that this dish was served when the money was tight. It was so delicious, you would never know it.We also made our own french bread. It was delicious!

Great Website, Jack! I'll visit often. Just moved to Lafayette from Houma. Not being from cajun parents, I ate alot of "redneck vittles"...LOL. However, I remember my mom making left over potato patties with mash potatoes. Something I do every now and then if I remember. Adding shrimp and other seasonings is tasty, too. But one of the treats with breakfast was maple syrup and pats of butter mashed up in a saucer for our dipping our drop biscuits in. Why don't I do that anymore? Gotta go make some drop biscuits, Jack...See Ya!
