doing more with less

With everybody doing more with less these days, what is the stratedgy that has proven most "effective" in getting what is needed to be done, accomplished, when so much of what we do is dependant on others to actually "do the work"?

Kevin, from the reading I've been doing, the answer appears to be "lean," as in lean enterprise, lean production, lean manufacturing, and even lean thinking. (You can Google any of those and come up with interesting material.)

The most visible tent in the lean "camp" is Six Sigma for quality projects; i.e., using data to improve processes, and thereby reducing costs while increasing quality at the same time. An example from the airline industry:
