Only that scant bit dealing with my ggf, John Slowey, who emigrated from Ireland to Allegheny County in about 1868.

Well now! A "required" field! Well, if you want me to write, I shall write but what I have to say is more a cry for help than a comment! I have been looking for my ggf, John J. Slowey, since 1995. His family is found in the 1870 Allegheny Co. census with the equivalent name, Sloy, and he is found in the Pittsburgh city directories in years up to 1876 working as a mechanic. Although I have made a very intensive search I have not found a single record of him in Ireland.

My McElroy family arrived in 1798 and settled in Bullskin Twp Fayette county, Pa. John McElroy and wife Elizabeth w/ sons Joseph,Hugh White and John. The other family members, born in US was Elizabeth,Margaret,Thomas and James. In 1811 they moved to Columbiana County, Ohio. They would have traveled close to Avella, I am guessing on the way to Ohio. If they followed the current name pattern at that time Elizabeth's father might have been Hugh White. So I am looking for some connection to Avella Whites or any other information.

I may in my grandmother's photo album I inherited.

Mr. White was superintendent of schools when I attended (Class of 1964). He is one of my most memorable people from Avella and had an impact on my life. I am very pleased to see that the train station has been restored and that A.D. White has been honored.

I am so excited that the bank building will be restored. I remember my grandmother (Theresa Geresti) telling me that the banker stole all the money in the 20's - 30's and it was closed. My Uncle Jim Geresti use to rent the basement for furniture sales - his cleaning business was located in the building next to the bank building.

I love Avella and I so happy to have grown up in a small town with a great moral compass. Living on the hill with my neighbors and friends is a truly treasured memory.

I'm actually searching for an article written about Great-Grandpa White (I'm number...97 I think...Can't find my book to confirm that though) that I found while I was at Gramma Smith's house while visiting with Aunt Peg. It's a newspaper article that was written while he was still alive. Any help you can give me would be wonderful!!! I'd like to add it to my teaching portfolio.

Darren, this is Joe. (Welcome! There are plenty of ways you can get involved in the AD White Society and our train station project. We actually should have a caboose donated and on-site soon! And, it might only be the first. The caboose will need some renovation, for certain, and then we will put it to use.

By the way, I do sell real estate in Washington County, and of course in Avella.) I would be happy to help in your home search.
