Does anyone know about Cusack's ability with the Irish language? I've seen Poitin but wondered did he do anything else in Irish. Also, where did he learn it?

Cyril Cusack first came to my attention in a recording of him playing Christy Mahon in J. M. Synge's "Playboy of the Western World". I had acted in the play in amateur drama (playing the even less heroic Shawn Keogh!) and I was given the recording by my wife as a present. I was enthralled by the gentle lilt of Cusack's voice. He made Synge 'sing'!

After that, on stage, television or film (who can forget the professionally-smooth gunsmith in "The Day of the Jackal"?) if he was in it, I was there. I still watch him as Yehuda the thoughtful Rabbi in "Jesus of Nazareth."

He was a truly marvellous actor, authoritative and riveting. The world, the stage and film is poorer for his passing. As a human being, I have no comment. Obviously he had strong views and that was fine. As for any foibles he had, it is customary to commend such things to the mercy of God, who alone understands us, and testify simply to merit.

Thank you, God, for Cyril Cusack, an actor who was a prince of the art.

One of my treasures is the Cusack and Mckenna Caedmon recording of Yeats' poetry. Certainly the best poetry reading I have heard. This is the way poetry should be read.

I understand that Cyril Cusack recorded albums of Beckett's Molloy, Malone Dies, The Unnamable in 1958. If anyone has access to these records (especially the Unnamable) I would be interested in hearing a snippet. Thank you!

i have as a child watched my late second cousins films, but its only been as an adult that i fully understood that cyril and my grandad my first cousins their fathers where brothers william cusack my great gradad was irelands all national champian runner that still no one has ever im believed to of beaten his time.and that in fact that the cusack stand is actually there in the stadium in his honour not as so many are to believe that it was placed there for the person known as micheal cusack or the citizen,as a cusack it saddens me that the cyril cusack family never recognised that cyril had on many occassions wrote to my grandad during thier adult life,as they were very close as children my grandad took up the funnies with cyril as he went into the english army and i think expecred cyril to follow suit as we all know he did not as his passion was acting.but they still remained close through letters that iv seen in the past that my late nan had shown to me.times when my grandad had wrote to cyril when he was in what was called the forgotton army telling tales of letters my nan had sent to him that she had wrote from bletchley park where her father captain walter bates was posted and where they had met at the officers dance.how my nan had told my grandad that she had met and served tea to the american president and that perhaps that he had taken a shine to her.and how churchill thought she was a charming ladie.this i know humoured cyril as he wrote in his letters getting to know inside info and keeping my grandad entertained with the world of acting.my grandad told me of tales of ireland growing up with cyril that he was fatter than him but was fare more gracefull.how they would joke with folk swopping identaties as they looked so simular as ironic do all us girls especially my mum and cyril eldest daughter.i am the granddaughter of james cusack.the side of the family his family dont recognise why??my grandad was very proud of him as i know cyril was of my granad and a

I loved Cyril as Grumio, in THE TAMING OF THE SHREW.
I even DID his MONOLOGUE today,in my SHAKESPEARE CLASS final.
It's when Grumio yells at Curtis, AND tells about the trip from Kate's house to Petruchio's home.
I wore my KISS ME KATE t-shirt.As an INSIDE JOKE.
I even auditioned for the part, last month.
And I did the SAME monologue.
God Bless and RIP Cyril.
Bye for now Grumio.LUV U.

Cyril Cusack was a fine actor and I'm sure he would have been proud to see such an excellent website about himself. An enjoyable site, very well presented. Probably the best I've seen dedicated to an actor.

A marvelous actor who made it all look deceptively simple. And what a range. From the tortured commandant in Tunes of Glory to the shy, proud gunsmith in Day of the Jackal.

I am the son of a biographer who was attempting to complete a book on Cyril in 1995 when he fell ill with cancer and passed away, 2 years after Cyril himself.

His name was Dr.Charles B. Smith.

I am in possession of material my father collected on Mr. Cusack and would like to forward it to his family. I have no way to contact them, and would like to do so to see if they wish to receive my father's research, perhaps to be utilized in a future book about Cyril. I met Cyril myself in Ireland, as a boy and years later as a young man, and regret that his passing preceeded my father's completion of his biography. He was a kind man. My phone number in the USA is (360) 336 - 9282. Thank You for any help you can be in facilitating the transfer of this material.

I was very pleased to find this site.I commend you for putting this site up.Cyril Cusack was a great actor and I am a very big fan of his.His contributions to cinema are, quite simply, wonderful.I have never seen a bad performance from him.He was very serious about his craft, which is evident from viewing him onscreen.I wonder, is he in any way related to John or Joan Cusack?

Before I found this site I only knew about Cyril Cusack's readings. Now I know a lot more about him. This is a great site -- well designed, easy to read and navigate, and quick to load. Thank you!
