Birdwatching in Northern Italy
The fabulous Po Delta region of Northern Italy provides birding enthusiasts with a wealth of opportunities to observe a wide variety of birdlife. The region between Ravenna, on the Adriatic coast, up to Venice, is renowned for the variety and quantity of both breeding and migratory species.
The Po Delta is a wetland with features varying from sand dunes and mediterraenean bush, to ancient woods of umbrella pines, salt pans, underwater forests, open shallow lagoons, river mouths, marshes and swampy grassland.
The birdlife includes, Grey, Purple, Squacco and Night Herons. Great White and Little Egrets, Glossy Ibis, Greater Flamingo, Pygmy Cormorant, Red footed Falcon, Golden Oriole, White Stork, Little Bittern, Spoonbill, Cetti’s and Fan tailed Warblers, Collared Pratincole, Penduline and Bearded Tits, and Montague’s Harrier.
Casa di Antonio is an English run Bed & Breakfast located in the heart of this region. Tony and Karen Ainley run Casa di Antonio and have built up good background knowledge of the best sites for birding, and what is likely to be seen where. We have dedicated 3 pages of our website to bird watching in the Po Delta (see events and activities pages)
We are situated in the province of Ferrara, and within an hours drive from Bologna airport, which is served by 3 British Airways flights a day from Gatwick. Ryanair also fly in from Stanstead and Birmingham.

Perhaps you will remember when Julie and I were your birding clients at Tandayapa in January 06. I'm planning to teach some birding classes at the Santa Clara Valley Audubon Society in Cupertino, CA. I have been contacting photographers (mostly local here in California but some from around the world) to request permission to show their photos in my classes. The classes are not-for-profit. I'd be happy to send details if you wish. I would like to show some of yours, especially a few of the Ecuador ones. (I'm thinking, in particular, of some of the hummingbird shots for a class I'm preparing on the variety of bird beaks). Please let me know if this would be OK.

Hello, Mr. Blain,
I found a flycatcher in a small island in Japan on 05-05-2006, Could you plaese help me to identify this bird. First I watched this bird, I thought this was a Red breasted Flycatcher, Later when I checked the photo carefully the color was different from the red breasted it looks more greyish than this bird with my experience. Also it lacks white patch on the tail feather. I'm wondering what this bird is every day for more than couple of weeks. A photo is uploaded on the following URL. Thank you in advanced.
