Looking for new information on the LST ship 494

Where are you from?

Woburn Massachusetts

Comments:

I am proud to say that my grandfather Chestley Ivan Lund Jr. or signalman “Joe Lund” as his ship mates knew him served on the 494. He told me many stories of his time on this ship as well as the RMS Queen Mary. I have some pictures of him during his service for the navy. I even still have his signalman pocket book and flag tpocket circle card. If any one is wondering if one of their loved ones picture may be captured by my grandfather then please feel free to reach out to me.

And thank you all for your service.

My Dad was Ralph Armand Burnett and served on the 494 at Normandy and Southern France before changing to the 602. (He thought he would get home sooner, but the 494 did) Dad died too young in 1991 and we did not find out too much about ship numbers until a letter was recently recovered. We knew he was in Normandy at Omaha Beach, but he would not talk about it, with teary eyes.
God Bless all of the men who served with him and helped bring him home.

Comments:

My dad, John Francese served on the LST 494. Like all the men, who were just kids at the time, risked their lives during this period. Our lives today would not be the same, if the outcome of the war and the many harships made by all of the armed services had not been made. My prayers go out to all those who have fallen and those who have passed away over the years. My dad like many of the others was just doing his job. No more no less. He loved the men on the ship. It was very apparent as he grew older and attended the reunions. He had deep respect for everyone he worked along side with during these invasions. My dad never forgot those days. He didn\'t talk about them for sure. His love of country and faith in God was the foundation of his will to survive these dark periods. On this 69th Anniversary, I will pause and remember my dad and all of those on the LST 494. May God Bless all of them men and their families.

Comments:

I am Manuel Fernandez's daughter and had been to many of the re-unions. Had the pleasure of meeting so many of the veterans. I am relocating from Ohio to Florida and pulled out my dad's photo albums and found myself in tears reading letters he wrote and letters written to him from fellow LST 494 vets, Just wondering how those still with us and all the families still doing. I continue to be so proud of these men STILL the "greatest generation!"

“Are you a World War 2 Veteran or know someone who is?”
In 1998, I began my project of collecting stories from World War 2 veterans and their families for the purpose of preserving and documenting information for future generations to learn. I would like to talk to any World War 2 veterans who are interested in sharing their stories. I would greatly appreciate it. The histories that I have been collecting and compiling over the last 12 years, all this information has been donated to the General Patton Memorial Museum.

If you are interested in sharing your story, please contact me.

Over the past several years Dad really enjoyed recalling memories of his buddies on the 494. In particular, of course, Omaha Beach was emotional for all, but it is what it is. The funniest stuff with the guys on shore leave could have been a comedy reality show. Dad passed in his sleep a few months ago here in Florida at the age of 88. I hope many of you also were able to enjoy some stories of ship life in World War II.

Comments:

My Dad was foreman of Higgins propellor shop on St Charles Ave during WW2. He designed propellors and calculated curvature on the blades in order to get more speed out of horsepower. Patents on his work were applied for in the name of A.J. Higgins. We lived on Prytania about 4 blocks from the shop. I used to walk over to his shop to visit him. He was always in his welders helmet working on propellers. In the evenings he would always be working at his drawing board working on propeller design. There were all size propellers. The larger ones hubs were filled with suet. Dad blew himself up when a larger prop exploded when the heat boiled the suet while he was welding on it. He survived the explosion but he was burned very badly. My Dad was an unsung hero of the war. I like to think Dad had a good part in our victory.
